?VERSION()

Returns a string that indicates the MySQL server version. As of MySQL 4.1, the string has the?utf8?character set.

mysql> SELECT VERSION();
        -> '4.1.25-standard'

Note that if your version string ends with?-log?this means that logging is enabled.
