Pentaho Reporting consists of a core reporting engine, capable of programmatic generating reports based on an XML definition file. Many tools have been developed surrounding the reporting engine, including GUI designers and ad-hoc wizards that guide the user through a step-by-step process of creating a report, using solely graphical tools without the need to write any code.
